''Bordetella holmesii'' is a Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterium of the genus ''Bordetella''.〔Weyant, Robbin S., et al. "''Bordetella holmesii sp. nov.'', a new Gram-negative species associated with septicemia." Journal of Clinical Microbiology 33.1 (1995): 1-7.〕 It was named in recognition of Barry Holmes, a biologist. It is asaccharolytic, oxidase-negative, and nonmotile, producing a brown pigment. It is associated with septicemia, endocarditis, and respiratory illness, especially in immunocompromised patients, such as asplenic or AIDS patients. It is often seen in conjunction with ''Bordetella pertussis'' infections (whooping cough),〔Zhang, Xuqing, et al. "Lack of Cross-protection against Bordetella holmesii after Pertussis Vaccination." Emerging infectious diseases 18.11 (2012): 1771.〕 although not always. ==References== 〔
